The National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) was founded in 1964 and consisted mostly of the former DP and DRP. Since then the party has caused much controversy. The question naturally arises as to whether the party should and can from a legal standpoint, be banned.

The 9th November is the date is associated the proclamation of the first German republic in 1918, the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923, Kristallnacht in 1938 and the fall of Berlin Wall in 1989. However as it stands the official national holiday is rather the 3rd of October – the day of German unity. Should it be changed?

On October 1st the former German finance minister Peer Steinbrück was nominated as candidate of the social democrats for the upcoming Federal elections next fall.
